The Train Ride Series

Landscapes seen through a window

Glaciers, tea plantations, Rocky Mountain passes and Scottish lochs. Five journeys where the journey itself is the destination.

Red Bernina Express train crossing an Alpine landscape in Switzerland

About this series

There is a particular pleasure in watching the world go by from a train window. You can sit back, follow the view and let the landscape change around you. The five routes in this series are known for exactly that kind of experience.

Two journeys cross the Swiss Alps, one climbing to glaciers and the other linking famous mountain resorts. In Sri Lanka, a busy everyday train winds through green tea country. In Canada, a dedicated tourist train crosses the Rockies, while in Scotland a regular line passes lochs, moorland and a famous curved viaduct.

Planning matters for rail travel. Some routes need reservations and some services are seasonal. Timetables change, so always use official railway sources for current schedules and prices. Pick a seat on the side with the best views if you can, carry snacks and water, and keep your camera ready but put it down sometimes and simply watch.
