The Lighthouse Series
Towers of light at the edge of the land
From granite shores in Nova Scotia to the westernmost cape of mainland Europe, these lighthouses mark the places where land gives way to the sea.
About this series
A lighthouse is a practical building with a poetic job. It was built to warn, guide and keep people alive, yet today many of us travel to them simply to stand nearby and watch the water. That mix of function and atmosphere is what connects this collection.
The six places in this series vary a great deal. Some stand on wild headlands with little more than grass and wind around them. Others sit at the mouth of a busy harbour or beside a small fishing village. One of them guards a lake rather than an ocean. What they share is a strong sense of position: each one makes you aware of exactly where the land ends.
You will find medieval stonework, classic white towers with red details, and simple structures perched on dramatic cliffs. Visit for the architecture, stay for the light at the end of the day. Many of these sites are exposed, so a warm layer and sensible shoes are worth packing even in summer.
