The Colorful Streets Series

Neighbourhoods painted with identity

Blue alleys, rainbow canals and patterned facades. Five places where colour is not decoration but a way of telling stories about people and place.

Brightly painted houses reflected in a canal on Burano, Italy

About this series

Colour on buildings is rarely accidental. In the places of this series it can mark a fishing family's home, celebrate a community's identity or show pride in a neighbourhood that has seen hard times. Walking these streets is like reading a local language written in paint.

The series stretches from the mountains of northern Morocco to a lagoon island near Venice, a small Andean town in Colombia, a historic quarter in Cape Town and a port neighbourhood in Buenos Aires. Each place has a different story behind its colours, and learning a little of it makes a visit far richer.

These are also real homes. The best way to enjoy them is slowly, on foot, with curiosity and respect. Ask before photographing people, avoid blocking doorways for the perfect shot, and support local shops and cafes. Early morning light is softer and the streets are quieter, so you will see more of everyday life.
