About this series

A good night market is more than a place to eat. It is a public living room, a shopping street and a stage for local life, all squeezed into a few hours after dark. This series brings together six markets where the evening atmosphere is as memorable as the food.

Taipei appears twice, and for good reason: night markets are an essential part of daily life in Taiwan, and Shilin and Raohe offer quite different experiences. Elsewhere you will find a hawker street in Kuala Lumpur, a vast square in Marrakech, a calm craft market in Luang Prabang and a sprawling bazaar in Chiang Mai.

Go hungry, carry small change and be ready to share tables. Try one thing from several stalls rather than a full meal at one. Follow the queues of local customers, and pay attention to hygiene, especially with water and raw ingredients. Prices, stalls and operating days change, so treat every visit as a small adventure.
