No. 5 of 6 in The Hot Springs Series
Saturnia Hot Springs
Tuscany, Italy
Why it belongs in the series
At Cascate del Mulino, warm sulphurous water flows over limestone cascades into natural pools beside an old mill. It is a simple, open-air setting in the Tuscan countryside.
How to get there
Saturnia is in southern Tuscany, in the Maremma area. A car is the most practical way to reach it, and the area combines well with hill towns nearby.
Best time to visit
The water is warm year-round. Early morning or weekday visits are usually quieter than summer weekends.
Good to know
The natural pools have no formal changing facilities, so plan accordingly. The water smells of sulphur, which can cling to swimwear. A separate spa resort nearby charges for entry.
Memorable momentSitting in a warm limestone pool as steam rises into the morning light over the fields.
