No. 3 of 6 in The Lighthouse Series
Cabo da Roca
Sintra-Cascais, Portugal
Why it belongs in the series
Cabo da Roca marks the westernmost point of mainland Europe, and its lighthouse stands high above sheer cliffs facing the open Atlantic. The setting gives the building a sense of being at the very edge of a continent.
How to get there
The cape lies west of Lisbon, near Sintra and Cascais. Many visitors combine it with a day in Sintra, travelling by car or by local bus from either town.
Best time to visit
It can be visited throughout the year. Late afternoon light is lovely here, though wind is common and the cliffs often feel cooler than nearby towns.
Good to know
Keep to marked paths and away from cliff edges. Bring a jacket, as the wind can be strong. Facilities are basic, so plan food and water accordingly.
Memorable momentStanding at the monument and realising there is nothing between you and the Americas but ocean.
