No. 3 of 6 in The Night Market Series
Jemaa el-Fnaa
Marrakech, Morocco
Why it belongs in the series
By day it is a busy square. By evening Jemaa el-Fnaa becomes a sea of food stalls, storytellers and musicians. Its role as a space for oral tradition and performance is recognised by UNESCO.
How to get there
The square sits at the heart of the Marrakech medina and is reachable on foot from most riads in the old town. Taxis can drop you nearby.
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are generally more comfortable than the summer heat. Arrive around sunset to watch the stalls being set up.
Good to know
Performers and some vendors may expect payment for photos. Agree prices before eating at a stall, and keep an eye on your belongings in dense crowds.
Memorable momentWatching the square from a rooftop as hundreds of grills send smoke into the evening sky.
